As COVID-19 continues to spread, so does the search for treatments.

Several medications are being evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as possible treatment options for COVID-19. The most well-known of these medications are hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) and remdesivir.

These agents are being used to treat hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in the hopes that they are effective. Given that the efficacy and side effect profiles of these drugs are unknown among COVID-19 patients, SteadyMD doctors are unable to prescribe these medications virtually. Additionally, many U.S. states have strict criteria for dispensing these medications due to supply issues.

At this time there are no FDA-approved therapeutics or drugs to treat, cure or prevent COVID-19.

According to SteadyMD’s Dr. Dani Urcuyo:

“As doctors we are always thinking about the risks and benefits of a particular treatment, and in order to determine that, we need data. However, there are certain situations where it may be appropriate to use a drug with a less well-known risk/benefit profile, such as when someone is critically ill and no other medications are known to work.”

______________

More information about these medications:

Hydroxychloroquine is an oral prescription drug that has previously been used to treat malaria and inflammatory conditions such as arthritis or lupus.

Remdesivir is an antiviral drug that had previously been tested as a possible treatment for Ebola, and has exhibited potential to be effective against certain respiratory conditions.

Additionally, there are people who already rely on these drugs to treat their chronic conditions. Exerting caution with the limited available supplies of these medications helps to ensure that the people who need them for their wellbeing can continue to have access to them.

Evaluation for an effective treatment for COVID-19 is ongoing. If you or a loved one are experiencing symptoms (fever, shortness of breath, or cough), please consult with a doctor.
